Today, TIME has decided to release it’s ninth annual TIME 100, which list the 100 most influential people in the world.

Managing Editor Rick Stengel writes, “The TIME 100 list is about the infinite possibilities of influence and the power of influence to change the world…. Now [one] can tweet a phrase that reaches millions in a flash. Influence was never easier—or more ephemeral. Which is why we try to choose those people whose influence is both lasting and, with a few notable exceptions, laudable.”

The TIME 100 features often-surprising pairings of the influentials and the guest contributors TIME selects to write about them. The ninth-annual list includes: President Barack Obama on Warren Buffett, Bill Bain on Governor Mitt Romney, Howard Stern on Matt Lauer, Garry Trudeau on Stephen Colbert, Valerie Plame Wilson on Claire Danes, Johnny Depp on Harvey Weinstein, Al Gore on Tim Cook, Stella McCartney on Rihanna, Cicely Tyson on Viola Davis, Alyssa Milano on Pete Cashmore, Robert Gates on Hillary Clinton, Jeb Bush on Marco Rubio, Judd Apatow on Kristen Wiig, Pink on Adele, Jeremy Lin on Tim Tebow, Ralph Nader on Ron Paul, and many more. The list is divided into five categories: Moguls, Breakouts, Icons, Pioneers and Leaders.

The TIME 100 includes 54 international figures from 37 countries, more than any previous TIME 100 and the first time that there are more international names on the list than American. Some of the notable international names include: Benjamin Netanyahu, Lionel Messi, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa Middleton, Maria das Graças Silva Foster, Dilma Rousseff, Wang Yang, Xi Jinping, Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, Angela Merkel, Christine Lagarde, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, René Redzepi and many more.

The winner of the TIME.com TIME 100 poll was Anonymous, the network of Internet activists, which received more than 395,000 “Yes” votes. As winner of the poll, they are included on the official TIME 100.

It has front and rear facing 3D cameras for tracking motion of both the scenery and the user. Together they can create fully tracked augmented reality, and couple with a 3D screen that needs no glasses, everything will look as if it is actually there.

The screen is also totally transparent. All the electronics are held in the tiny multifunctional on/off button, thanks to advances in microscopic electronic components.”

The proposed rule — years in the making and approved by the White House after months of review — will require any new power plant to emit no more than 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per megawatt of electricity produced. The average U.S. natural gas plant, which emits 800 to 850 pounds of CO2 per megawatt, meets that standard; coal plants emit an average of 1,768 pounds of carbon dioxide per megawatt.-The Washington Post

This visualization shows ocean surface currents around the world during the period from June 2005 through Decmeber 2007. The visualization does not include a narration or annotations; the goal was to use ocean flow data to create a simple, visceral experience.

This visualization was produced using NASA/JPL’s computational model called Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, Phase II or ECCO2.. ECCO2 is high resolution model of the global ocean and sea-ice. ECCO2 attempts to model the oceans and sea ice to increasingly accurate resolutions that begin to resolve ocean eddies and other narrow-current systems which transport heat and carbon in the oceans. The ECCO2 model simulates ocean flows at all depths, but only surface flows are used in this visualization. The dark patterns under the ocean represent the undersea bathymetry. Topographic land exaggeration is 20x and bathymetric exaggeration is 40x.

According to researchers at the University of Scranton, which is located in Pennsylvania has found out that popcorn contains more  antioxidants than other fruits and vegetables. For those that don’t know, antioxidants are what doctors say protect us against cancer and heart disease. So will you be eating more popcorn?

So I received an email from a colleague late last Thursday afternoon probing a way in which we could gather minority Capitol Hill staffers and organizations on the East steps of the US Capitol as a way of showing that what happened to Trayvon Martn could’ve easily been us, our fathers, or our brothers. And what began as a late hour idea turned into a display of solidarity among various groups of ethnicity, religion and political belief. It was a beautiful sight to see….

As of 5:52 EDT today, James Cameron (director of Avatar) reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the ocean and a depth not reached by any human being since 1960. This expedition comes just a few weeks after Cameron set a solo diving world record in preparation for his dive into the Mariana Trench. Cameron will spend about six hours at the bottom of the ocean, collecting samples as well as video footage with multiple 3D video cameras. This expedition is the culmination of seven years of work by Cameron and his crew to build the Deepsea Challenger, a submersible capable of making the journey. After his time 35,756 feet underwater, the Deepsea Challenger will drop its weights and head back to two research ships on the surface. National Geographic has been covering this voyage closely, so keep your eyes on its site for more details on what Cameron finds in the depths. via
