It is now 2011 which means Fashion Week in New York is just around the corner. Making news abroad, Norway has banned fur from the biannual Oslo Fashion Week, Ecouterre reports (via Huffington Post) making them the first country to do so.

Spearheaded by Mote Mot Pels (Fashion Against Fur), the move was helped along with the strong support of 220 Norwegian fashion industry media, including Norwegian Elle and Norwegian Cosmopolitan, and designers Leila Hafzi, Thomas Ryen of Undorn, and John Erling Vinnem of JohnnyLove who refuse to use fur in their collections.

Paul Vasbotten, general manager of Oslo Fashion Week, had this to say about the event’s fur-free approach:

It has been a very natural choice for us. We are doing this in order to increase ethical values in fashion.
